GTA 6 Pre-Load Moves Up to November 10, and It Needs 212GB

Rockstar has moved GTA 6's digital pre-load forward to November 10 and says it needs up to 212GB. Boxed code copies still reach shops November 12.

Rockstar has moved GTA 6’s digital pre-load forward by two days. In a Newswire post on November 3 it said digital pre-load opens November 10, not the November 12 it announced in June, and that the game needs up to 212GB of storage depending on your device. That is the first official size Rockstar has published. Boxed copies stay on November 12.

The game itself still unlocks on November 19. Pre-loading only gets the files onto your console early.

What changed, and what didn’t

The June pre-order announcement gave one date for everyone. The new post splits it by format and by platform:

June announcement November 3 update
Digital pre-load, PS5 November 12 November 10, midnight local time
Digital pre-load, Xbox Series X|S November 12 November 10, 12 a.m. GMT worldwide
Code-in-box copies Available from November 12 Unchanged: “beginning November 12”
Storage Not published Up to 212GB, depending on device
Release November 19 November 19

Rockstar’s support FAQ sets out the platform split. On PS5 the window opens at midnight in your own time zone, so it rolls across the world. On Xbox it opens at the same moment everywhere. Sony’s own PlayStation Blog post gives the same PS5 date and says pre-download is for players who pre-order.

When Xbox pre-load opens where you live

A single global start means American Xbox owners get in on the evening of Monday, November 9. US clocks went back on November 1, so Eastern time is five hours behind GMT.

Location Xbox pre-load opens
US Pacific 4:00 p.m., Monday November 9
US Eastern 7:00 p.m., Monday November 9
UK 12:00 a.m., Tuesday November 10
Central Europe 1:00 a.m., Tuesday November 10
Japan 9:00 a.m., Tuesday November 10
Sydney 11:00 a.m., Tuesday November 10
New Zealand 1:00 p.m., Tuesday November 10

PS5 owners everywhere start at their own midnight going into Tuesday, November 10. That gives a West Coast Xbox owner about eight hours’ head start on a West Coast PS5 owner. The gap only affects the download. It says nothing about when either version unlocks on launch day.

What 212GB means for each console

Two official statements put a number on the game. Rockstar says the pre-load “will require up to 212 GB depending on your device.” The PlayStation Blog asks players to clear “a minimum of 212GB of storage space on your PS5.” Taken together, plan for 212GB free on any console. Rockstar has not said which device needs less, or how much less.

Against the space each console really has (figures from our storage guide):

Console Roughly usable Share taken by 212GB
PS5 (launch model, 825GB) ~667GB About a third
PS5 Slim (1TB) ~842GB About a quarter
Xbox Series X (1TB) ~802GB About a quarter
Xbox Series S (512GB) ~364GB More than half

The 512GB Series S is the console this hurts. If you own one, check now how much space is actually free, not how much the box says.

The number also settles a rumor. On October 27, a tracker of PlayStation Store data reported 210GB on PS5. Major outlets repeated it, but every one of them was relaying that single post, which is why our file size page kept it at rumored. The tracker was 2GB out. That page is now confirmed.

What the boxed edition now costs you

The no-disc decision already meant a physical copy was a download code in a case. Until now, both formats at least started downloading on the same day. They no longer do. Code-in-box copies “should be available from retailers beginning November 12,” Rockstar says, two days after digital pre-orders can start.

Two days matters when the download is 212GB. If you haven’t committed to a format, the case for buying digital just got stronger. The physical vs digital comparison has the full trade-off.

Still not announced

  • Unlock hour on November 19. PlayStation Store listings point to a staggered local-midnight launch, but Rockstar has published no timetable. Different pre-load rules on each platform make it unsafe to assume the launch unlock works the same way on both. The unlock-time tracker stays at likely.
  • A day-one update. Nobody has announced one or given a size, so leave some space beyond the 212GB.
  • Separate figures for each console. “Depending on your device” is all Rockstar has said.

Rockstar also has something for launch day itself. A printable cover poster and a map of Leonida will be free to download from its site from November 19. A double-sided physical poster will follow at the Rockstar Store for $0.99, or free with any other order.

This article updates if Rockstar publishes sizes for each console or a launch-hour schedule.
