GTA 6 Preload Opens November 12 — And There's No Disc

Rockstar has confirmed when you can start downloading Grand Theft Auto VI: preloading opens November 12, 2026 at local midnight, a full week before the November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The second detail is the more consequential one. The boxed edition does not contain a game disc. A physical copy is a download code in a case — redeem it, and the download begins from November 12 like any digital purchase.
Why a week, and why no disc
The two announcements are the same decision. A week-long preload window lets retailers ship physical copies early without anyone getting playable access ahead of launch, because there is nothing playable on the disc — there is no disc. The code simply unlocks the same download everyone else is queuing for.
It also solves the problem a game this size creates. Millions of simultaneous downloads on launch night is a bad plan for both the platform holders’ infrastructure and for players on slower connections. Spreading it across seven days makes launch night a matter of applying a day-one patch rather than pulling an entire open world down the pipe.
What this changes for buyers
The digital-versus-physical calculation has effectively collapsed:
| Physical | Digital | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Download code in a case | Download code, no case |
| Disc required | No disc exists | No |
| Preload from | Nov 12, once redeemed | Nov 12 |
| Disc-drive console needed | No | No |
| Real risk | Delivery arriving late | None |
Two practical consequences. Xbox Series S and digital-edition PS5 owners can now buy the boxed version — there is no drive requirement. And the only format-specific risk left is postal: a code that arrives on the 18th means you preload on the 18th. If starting on the 12th matters to you, buy digital.
Anyone reselling should also note that a redeemed code has no resale value, which is the one thing the old disc genuinely offered.
Our physical vs digital breakdown covers the full trade-off, and the pre-order guide has the edition comparison.
What is still unknown
The file size. Rockstar has not published a download or install figure, and no amount of confident social-media arithmetic changes that — see our file size tracker. What the preload date does give you is a firm deadline: whatever the number turns out to be, the space has to be free by November 12, not November 19. The storage guide covers how to clear room without deleting anything you’ll miss.
Also unannounced: whether a day-one patch will be required at launch, and the exact unlock time on November 19 in each region.
This page updates if Rockstar publishes preload timings by region or a final install size.
