GTA 6 and GTA 5 at a glance

Los Santos gives way to Leonida

GTA V centers on Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County, a fictionalized take on Southern California. Its geography supports dense city streets, coast, desert, hills, and smaller communities.

GTA 6 moves across the country to fictional Florida. Vice City is the best-known name, but Leonida is a state setting with several confirmed regions: Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga. That list signals regional variety beyond a single metropolitan center without proving the map’s exact dimensions or boundaries.

The climate, roads, wetlands, islands, industry, and communities shown in official material give Leonida a different identity from Southern California. Three separate leads become a central pair

GTA V’s campaign is structured around Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Each has a distinct background, personal circle, and relationship to Los Santos. Switching among three viewpoints lets the story move between different kinds of criminal life.

GTA 6 confirms two protagonists: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Official trailers place their relationship at the center of the presentation. This is genuinely different from GTA V’s three-person ensemble, but Rockstar has not fully explained how character switching, mission division, or player control will work.

Lucia is also the first modern female lead in a main numbered GTA campaign. That is a meaningful change in viewpoint. It should not be inflated into predictions about her arc; the confirmed story summary explains what is established and what remains open.

A different contemporary moment

Both games use versions of contemporary America, but they are separated by more than a decade of real-world change. GTA V reflects the media, celebrity culture, technology, and economic anxieties surrounding its 2013 launch period. GTA 6’s official footage depicts present-day Leonida and a social environment shaped by a later era.

That shift matters because GTA’s fictional advertising, radio, television, and public behavior are part of its world-building. Trailer 1 particularly emphasizes a contemporary flow of public spectacle and short-form clips. This observation does not confirm a player-operated social-media system or any specific mechanic.

Hardware and buying options have changed

GTA V originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360, then expanded to newer consoles and PC. GTA 6 begins on current console hardware instead. No PS4, Xbox One, or PC edition has been announced.

• A state called Leonida rather than GTA V’s Los Santos and Blaine County setting
• Multiple named regions with Florida-inspired variety
• A current-generation-only announced console release
• New supporting characters, including Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista, Brian Heder, and Cal Hampton

These are concrete differences. They do not establish exact mission systems, world size, performance modes, or online plans.

What is still unknown

Rockstar has not publicly answered every comparison players want to make. Important unknowns include exact storage requirements, detailed performance targets by console, the full map boundary, and whether an online successor launches alongside the story game. One distribution difference is already settled: GTA 5 shipped on disc, while GTA 6 has none at launch.

The biggest verified difference is not simply “more.” GTA 6 uses a different state, a different central relationship, and a different contemporary context.
