Every GTA Game in Order

The clearest way to organize Grand Theft Auto is by release order, then by its three broad eras. This guide focuses on the principal standalone games and the entries most useful for understanding the series’ progression.

Main GTA games in release order

The table uses original release years and conservative descriptions. Some games have ports or later editions, but those do not change their place in the sequence.

Release Game Setting Lead protagonist or player role
1997 Grand Theft Auto Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City Player-selected criminals
1999 Grand Theft Auto 2 Anywhere City Claude Speed
2001 Grand Theft Auto III Liberty City Claude
2002 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Vice City in 1986 Tommy Vercetti
2004 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas State of San Andreas in 1992 Carl “CJ” Johnson
2008 Grand Theft Auto IV Liberty City Niko Bellic
2009 GTA IV: The Lost and Damned Liberty City Johnny Klebitz
2009 GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony Liberty City Luis Lopez
2013 Grand Theft Auto V Los Santos and Blaine County Michael, Franklin, and Trevor
2026 Grand Theft Auto VI Present-day Leonida Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval

This is not every expansion, handheld title, or multiplayer product. GTA: London, Advance, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and Chinatown Wars are meaningful parts of the catalog, but the table keeps the path through the main releases readable.

Release order is not chronological story order

The publication date and the story’s historical period are different things. Vice City came out after GTA III but takes place in 1986. San Andreas arrived later but takes place in 1992. GTA III depicts a later period than both.

Playing those three in release order shows how controls, world design, and storytelling developed. Playing by their in-world chronology changes the narrative sequence but cannot recreate that design evolution. Because their plots are independently introduced, either approach works; release order is generally easier to follow.

GTA 6 is described as present day, but Rockstar has not given an exact in-world calendar year. Its confirmed real-world release date is November 19, 2026.

The 2D universe

The original Grand Theft Auto and GTA 2 are commonly grouped into the 2D era. Their top-down presentation and more arcade-like structure differ sharply from the later third-person games. The first GTA already established names such as Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City, but those locations would be reinvented later.

This era is historically important because it established the basic combination of cars, crime, missions, and urban freedom. It is not required story preparation for anything in GTA 6.

The 3D universe

GTA III began the 3D era in 2001. It moved the series into a third-person, fully 3D city and provided the foundation for Vice City and San Andreas.

Game Original release Distinctive role in the era
GTA III 2001 Established the 3D Liberty City formula with Claude
Vice City 2002 Shifted to 1986 Vice City and Tommy Vercetti
San Andreas 2004 Expanded across a fictional state with CJ

The three share a broad continuity and sometimes reference related people or events. Even so, each has its own lead and central conflict. Vice City’s relevance to GTA 6 is primarily historical and geographical: both use a fictional city inspired by Miami, but in different eras and continuities.

The HD universe

GTA IV started the HD era in 2008 with a redesigned Liberty City and Niko Bellic. GTA V followed in 2013 with another reimagined location: Los Santos and its surrounding countryside. Its campaign switches between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.

GTA 6 is the next numbered HD-era game. It moves the focus to Leonida, including Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga. Lucia and Jason form its central pair. Read the current character guide and map and setting guide for the confirmed details.

Where GTA 6 sits

GTA 6 is both a continuation of the modern series and a fresh entry point. It returns to the name Vice City, yet the broader state of Leonida makes this more than a remake of the 2002 map. Its present-day setting also creates a major contrast with the 1986 backdrop of Tommy Vercetti’s game.

The official material supports comparison at a high level: two leads, a contemporary social landscape, and several named regions. It does not establish that players must know an older plot. Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 are the primary sources for the new tone and characters.

Best play order for different players

There is no single mandatory marathon. Pick the shortest route that matches your interest:

The complete sequence is useful context, not an entrance exam. GTA’s cities, technical eras, and recurring satire build a recognizable identity, while the main games continue to introduce new protagonists and conflicts. For a concise briefing on the newest entry, use the confirmed GTA 6 overview rather than trying to extract future facts from older games.
