How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?

Rockstar says Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map and about three times Red Dead Redemption 2's, with Vice City alone around double Los Santos. No square-mileage figure has been published.

Confirmed — Rockstar has finally given comparative figures. During the press activity around the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson put numbers on the record for the first time: the playable state of Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s. Vice City on its own is around double the size of Los Santos.

One caveat worth keeping: these are ratios, not measurements. Rockstar still has not published square mileage, and it has not said whether the comparison counts water, so the precise-sounding figures circulating in fan mapping projects remain estimates.

What the figures mean in practice

Comparison Rockstar’s figure
Leonida vs GTA 5’s map About 2x
Leonida vs Red Dead Redemption 2’s map About 3x
Vice City vs Los Santos About 2x

The second row is the one that reframes expectations. Red Dead Redemption 2’s world is already substantially larger than GTA 5’s, and it is the densest world Rockstar has built. Tripling it while roughly doubling the size of the urban core is a different proposition from simply extending a countryside.

The regions that fill it

Officially named: Vice City, the Leonida Keys island chain, the Grassrivers wetlands, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga — an urban core plus coastline, swamp, farmland and hills. That spread is why the total is so much larger than GTA 5’s, where Los Santos sat against a single stretch of countryside and one mountain.

Every named region is pinned with its evidence on our speculative Leonida map, and the map and setting guide works through what each one is for.

Why size alone was never the question

A bigger map is only worth the traversal time if it is filled. The same reveal established a great deal about density — enterable businesses, repeatable robberies, a rebuilt wanted system, and a story Nelson put at roughly 80 hours in his own playthrough. Those figures matter more to how the map feels than its outline does.

What is still unknown

No square mileage, no confirmation of how much of the total is water, and no statement on whether every named region is accessible from the start. Rockstar has also said nothing about post-launch map expansion.

The Extended Look breakdown covers the rest of what the August reveal established.

This page will be updated if Rockstar publishes actual dimensions before launch.
