GTA 6's Extended Look: What Rockstar Actually Showed

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix at 3:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 27, and reached Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site six hours later. It ran 26 minutes, it was captured in-game on a PlayStation 5, and it is by a wide margin the most Grand Theft Auto VI anyone outside Rockstar has been shown.
The premiere itself was announced three weeks earlier. What was not known was the shape of it: not a cut-together trailer but a narrated run through Jason and Lucia’s life in Vice City, from a package pickup in a crime-ridden apartment block to a robbery, a police chase and a gala infiltration. Rockstar paired it with a press embargo lift, so the video landed alongside hands-off previews and interviews in which studio staff answered questions on the record for the first time in years.
The wanted system is the biggest mechanical change
Six stars are back. GTA V capped police heat at five; the Extended Look shows a six-star scale in the corner of the screen, and the previews explain a system built underneath it that has no real precedent in the series.
Crimes now have to be observed. Police are alerted when a witness sees the offence or a security system catches it, and what responding officers know is tracked separately from how badly they want you. Icons below the stars show which details dispatch actually has — your face, your clothing, your vehicle — and hollow stars indicate police searching without a description to search against. Changing an outfit, putting on a mask before a job, or swapping cars therefore does mechanical work rather than cosmetic work. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson walked press through this directly, including outfits stored in a personal vehicle’s trunk.
That converts a long-running guess into a documented system. Our wanted level tracker and the disguises entry both moved to confirmed on the strength of it.
Switching between Jason and Lucia is free-form
The dual-protagonist structure is not GTA V’s rotating-cast model. Players can switch between Jason and Lucia at will, keep one as a companion while controlling the other, or send them off separately — Rockstar’s framing is that you can play as a couple or cause chaos independently. The footage shows both: the pair splitting across two floors of a building, and a highway drive where control passes to the passenger seat mid-journey. Some jobs are offered to one of them only, with the implication that the player picks who takes it.
The numbers Rockstar gave the press
| Claim | Figure | Attribution |
|---|---|---|
| Map vs GTA V | Roughly twice the size | Rob Nelson, Rockstar North |
| Map vs Red Dead Redemption 2 | Roughly three times the size | Rob Nelson, Rockstar North |
| Vice City vs Los Santos | About twice the size | Rob Nelson, Rockstar North |
| Story length | About 80 hours in his own playthrough | Rob Nelson to The New York Times |
| NPC animations | More than 600,000, against roughly 55,000 in GTA V | Rockstar preview materials |
These are the first size and length figures Rockstar has ever put on the record for this game, and they retire two of the oldest questions in the rumor tracker. The 80-hour number deserves one caveat that the headlines dropped: Nelson described his own run through the main story plus optional objectives that carry narrative weight, not a certified completion time.
Everything else worth noting
Convenience-store and gas-station robberies return as repeatable activities, with a speed-versus-take trade-off and multiple ways in and out. A Criminal Profile tracks how you operate over time — gratuitous violence included — in place of Red Dead’s Honor meter. Jason has a slow-motion targeting ability; Lucia has close-quarters counters. Scuba diving, kayaking, jet skis, basketball, base jumping, working out and nightclubs all appear. So do dogs you can pet.
What it did not say
No PC version, no frame-rate target, no install size, no launch-hour unlock. The confirmed roundup has been updated with what changed and still lists those four as open. November 19 was reaffirmed, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Take-Two has already said this was one beat among several before launch — so the marketing calendar is not finished yet. For the geography the footage covers, the map and setting guide is the fuller reference.
