How does switching between Jason and Lucia work?
Confirmed. Players can switch between Jason and Lucia freely, including mid-mission. One can tag along while you control the other, or the pair can operate separately — Rockstar frames it as playing as a couple or independently.
Confirmed — switching is free-form, and available inside missions. The Extended Look that premiered on August 27, 2026 shows control passing between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos repeatedly, and Rockstar’s accompanying previews set out the rules: you can swap between them at will, keep one as a companion while playing the other, or leave them to operate apart. Rockstar’s own framing is that you can play as a couple or go off and cause chaos independently.
What the footage shows
Two sequences make the design clear. In one, the pair split across separate floors of a building — Jason working from cover with a firearm while Lucia moves on foot through the stairwell. In another, Jason drives the highway and control shifts to Lucia in the passenger seat, where she is free to use the in-game phone rather than take over the wheel.
The obvious application is a chase: drive as one character, swap to the passenger to shoot back, swap again. The less obvious one is police evasion, where separating means presenting two different descriptions to officers who are tracking your appearance.
Not GTA V’s model
GTA V’s three-character switch was a camera lift away to whatever Michael, Franklin or Trevor happened to be doing, with missions usually assigning you a role. GTA 6’s pair are in the same story at the same time, and the transition is designed to be seamless within a scene rather than a trip across the map.
| GTA V | GTA 6 | |
|---|---|---|
| Playable leads | Three | Two |
| Switching in missions | Largely scripted | Free, at the player’s discretion |
| Characters when not controlled | Living separate lives | Present as a companion, or elsewhere by choice |
| Solo work | Character-specific missions | Some jobs offered to one of them, player picks |
Jobs offered to one of them
The previews describe work that only one of the two can take, with the framing implying the player chooses who goes. That is a structural difference from a straightforward dual-protagonist story: it puts small allocation decisions in the player’s hands and gives the choices and consequences question real surface area.
What is still unknown
Rockstar has not said whether switching is restricted during particular story beats, whether distance between the two matters, or how the transition is presented in the open world outside a mission. Nor has it detailed how far the pair’s separate activities diverge when you leave one alone for a long stretch.
The Extended Look breakdown covers what else the reveal established about how the two leads work.
This page will be updated if Rockstar details the open-world switching interface before launch.
