What is GTA 6's combat and weapon system like?
GTA 6 includes armed combat, but its controls and inventory rules are not officially detailed. A weapon wheel, limited carry system, cover mechanics, and upgrades remain unconfirmed.
Rumored — combat exists, but the operating details are undisclosed. GTA 6’s crime story and official footage make weapons and violent confrontations part of the game. Rockstar has not explained aiming, cover, recoil, damage, inventory capacity, weapon selection, upgrades, or how Jason and Lucia differ in combat.
Calling the system “like GTA V” or “like Red Dead Redemption 2” is currently an assumption. Both are useful precedents, but GTA 6 may combine, revise, or discard their mechanics.
What official material establishes
The official trailers show armed characters and crime scenarios. They establish the broad presence of firearms, not a playable control scheme. Cinematic framing can hide the HUD, skip transitions, and present actions that occur only in scripted sequences.
No official GTA 6 gameplay breakdown has demonstrated a weapon wheel, cover snap, free aim, lock-on settings, ammunition types, weapon maintenance, or inventory storage. There is also no published controller layout. Trailer 2 gives a richer view of Jason and Lucia’s world, but it is not a combat tutorial.
GTA V versus Red Dead Redemption 2
GTA V lets story characters carry a broad arsenal and select weapons through a radial wheel. It uses third-person aiming, optional cover, melee attacks, and character abilities. Weapons can be modified at gun shops, while ammunition and armor support the wider action loop.
Red Dead Redemption 2 places tighter limits on immediately carried long guns, with additional weapons stored on the horse. Its radial menus cover weapons and items, and its combat is shaped by slower animations, weapon condition, ammunition choices, and Dead Eye. That creates more friction and preparation than GTA V.
| Design question | GTA V | RDR2 | GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radial weapon selection | Yes | Yes | Not announced |
| Large portable arsenal | Yes | No, long guns are more limited | Unknown |
| Cover system | Yes | Yes | Not detailed |
| Weapon upkeep | Minimal | Condition and cleaning | Unknown |
| Character-specific ability | Yes | Dead Eye focus | Unknown |
Because Rockstar has used radial selection twice, another wheel is plausible. It is not confirmed. The same caution applies to suggestions that GTA 6 limits weapons to what can be visibly carried.
Questions that remain open
We do not know whether Jason and Lucia share weapons, maintain separate inventories, or specialize in different abilities. The unanswered character-switching system makes those inventory questions harder to resolve. Rockstar has also not explained stealth, melee depth, police reactions to openly carried weapons, or whether cars can store equipment.
Difficulty and accessibility settings could materially change combat through aim assistance, control remapping, camera options, or timing adjustments. Those options are also unannounced. Frame rate is a separate question: no combat footage confirms the 60fps performance-mode rumor.
Claims circulating from unofficial sources about inventory slots or detailed animations are not a sound basis for a feature page. Without official context, even an accurate-looking interface could be obsolete, incomplete, or misinterpreted.
What would confirm the system
The clearest answer would come from an official extended gameplay video showing weapon selection, aiming, cover, damage, and inventory management without cinematic cuts. Rockstar could also publish a gameplay feature describing gun shops, modifications, carry limits, or protagonist abilities.
Our read is deliberately narrow: armed combat is certain at a broad level; almost every mechanical detail remains rumored. The trailers hub is the best place to inspect released footage, while everything confirmed so far separates announcements from inference.
This page will be updated when Rockstar officially explains GTA 6’s combat, weapons, and inventory systems.
