Does GTA 6 have melee combat and stealth?
Yes. The Extended Look shows melee with dodges and contextual counters, plus stealth approaches — and the wanted system rewards them, since unwitnessed crimes are not reported.
Confirmed — both are in, and the wanted system gives stealth a purpose. The August 27, 2026 Extended Look shows Lucia fighting hand to hand in a stairwell, using a dodge and a contextual counter that ends with an improvised weapon. It also shows infiltration play, with characters moving through a guarded location rather than shooting into it.
The more important confirmation is structural. Because GTA 6 only reports a crime when a person witnesses it or a security system catches it, staying unseen is not a stylistic preference — it determines whether police are given a description of you at all.
What the footage establishes
- Melee with defensive options. A dodge, and counters that use what is at hand rather than a fixed animation set.
- Stealth approaches to objectives. Moving through a location on foot as an alternative to a firefight, including during a gala infiltration sequence.
- Character-specific strengths. Lucia’s showcased ability is close range; Jason’s is the ranged slow-motion tool covered on the cover and shooting page.
Why detection changes the calculation
In GTA V, stealth mattered inside heist missions and almost nowhere else, because free-roam crimes summoned police automatically. GTA 6 inverts that. A robbery nobody sees, or one committed masked, leaves police searching without a usable description — represented on the HUD by hollow wanted stars. The wanted system page covers the full mechanic.
That makes the quiet approach a live option in free roam for the first time in the series, rather than a mission-scripted one.
What Rockstar has said about doing it quietly
The day after the Extended Look, head of development Rob Nelson gave the first concrete description of a quiet approach in free roam. A convenience store can be robbed without raising anyone: picking the lock rather than tripping the alarm, dealing with the security cameras before going near the register. He also described suppressive fire — firing deliberately wide to pin someone in place — as a way to leave an encounter that has already gone loud without killing anybody. Those tools are covered on the non-lethal options page.
It is a small example, but it is the first Rockstar has given where the stealthy route and the loud route are both described for the same ordinary, repeatable activity.
What is still unknown
Rockstar has still not published a full stealth breakdown: no detail on crouching, noise, sightlines, enemy awareness states, silent takedowns, or whether visibility is modelled by light and cover. The melee system’s depth — blocking, disarms, weapon variety — is equally undocumented beyond what one stairwell sequence showed.
For the rest of what the reveal established, see the Extended Look breakdown.
This page will be updated if Rockstar details the stealth systems before launch.
