GTA 6 Carry Limits: Two Hidden Handguns, Two Long Guns

For most of its history Grand Theft Auto has let the player pull an arsenal out of thin air. GTA 6 does not. Rockstar North’s head of development, Rob Nelson, has put a number on what Jason and Lucia can have on them — and tied that number to how the people of Leonida react.

“You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want,” Nelson said. “You can carry two long guns, and they will be visible on your back and in your hand.”

The comments came from the hands-off preview sessions Rockstar ran at its Edinburgh studio, where Nelson played the game in front of invited press and creators, and surfaced in an interview with the YouTube creator TGG. GamesRadar+, GamingBolt, Game Rant and IBTimes UK reported the comments on September 6 and 7. Unlike the Famitsu interview that introduced suppressive fire, this one was given in English, so the lines above are Nelson’s own words rather than a translation.

The rules as Nelson described them

What you carry Where it is What the world does
Up to two handguns Concealed Nothing — they are hidden
A long gun Slung on your back Little — “you should be fine”
A second long gun In your hand People react and move away

The phrasing implies one long gun on the back and one held, not two slung. That makes carrying a second rifle a visible choice with a cost rather than free extra firepower.

It also answers a question this site has listed as open since the Extended Look: how many weapons GTA 6 lets you carry. Until now, carry limits sat in the “not described” column of our combat and weapons tracker.

Why the pocket arsenal had to go

Nelson framed the change as something the new NPCs forced rather than a realism dial turned up for its own sake. “In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people and they don’t react,” he said. “That doesn’t work here.”

His reasoning was about fidelity: “We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now.” Once pedestrians can read what a character is holding, a rocket launcher that appears from nowhere stops being a convention players ignore and becomes a visible break in the world.

The detail about reactions is the more interesting half. “NPCs are more nuanced than before, so if you just have a long gun on your back, you should be fine,” Nelson said. “If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it and they react and start moving away from you.”

That fills in a line Nelson gave Dazed in August — “Walk down the street with a rifle, and the city will have something to say about it.” The Dazed quote said NPCs notice weapons. The new one says they tell the difference between a weapon carried and a weapon brandished. We track that on the NPC AI and crowds page, which stays at likely: reactions are now well described, but routines and memory are not.

Series precedent

Game Carrying rules
GTA V Effectively unlimited — one of every weapon, available from the weapon wheel anywhere
Red Dead Redemption 2 Two sidearms and two long arms carried; the rest stay on the horse
GTA 6 Two concealed handguns and two long guns, one of them visibly in hand

The closest ancestor is plainly Red Dead Redemption 2, which also split a player’s weapons between what they carry on their body and what they leave behind. GTA 6 applies that thinking to a modern city, where a rifle in a crowd reads very differently from a rifle on a frontier trail.

How it connects to the wanted system

The limit makes more sense next to the rest of what Rockstar showed in August. Police in GTA 6 only respond to crimes a witness or camera actually sees, and they track a description of your face, clothes and vehicle (wanted level tracker). A visible long gun is exactly the kind of detail a witness notices. Concealed handguns, by the same logic, are what let Jason and Lucia walk through Vice City without starting something before they intend to.

What is still unanswered

Nelson did not say where the rest of a player’s weapons live. Game Rant’s write-up describes extra guns being kept in a hideout locker or a vehicle trunk, but that is the outlet’s paraphrase, not a quote, and Rockstar has not shown how storage works. Rockstar has already described outfits kept in a personal vehicle’s trunk, so a vehicle stash would fit — but fitting is not the same as confirmed.

Also open: whether police treat a slung rifle differently from civilians, whether the two protagonists share one stash, and what the weapon selection interface looks like. There is still no published weapon wheel, and our crafting and inventory page stays at rumored. Rockstar has described how many guns you carry, not a wider inventory or any crafting.
