How long is GTA 6's story?

Rockstar has given a figure: co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times his own playthrough took about 80 hours, covering the main story plus optional objectives that carry narrative consequences.

Confirmed — Rockstar has put a number on it, with an important qualification. In interviews around the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times that his own recent playthrough of GTA 6 ran about 80 hours. That covered the main story plus optional objectives which carry narrative consequences.

The qualification matters and most headlines dropped it. Eighty hours is one developer’s run, not a certified completion time and not a “main story only” figure. Rockstar has still not published a mission count or an official length.

What the figure is, and is not

What Nelson described What it does not establish
Scope Main story plus some optional objectives A main-story-only time
Who A developer who knows the game intimately A first-time player’s pace
Completion Not a 100% run Time to clear all side content

A developer familiar with every route will generally be faster than a new player through mission content and slower through nothing. On the other hand, an 80-hour run that includes optional material is not the same as an 80-hour critical path. Expect a wide spread once players are actually timing it.

How that compares

Red Dead Redemption 2’s main story runs roughly 50 hours for most players, and GTA 5’s around 30. If Nelson’s figure is representative, GTA 6’s campaign is the longest Rockstar has shipped — which tracks with a map roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s and a structure the previews describe as chapter-based, closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than to GTA 5’s three-strand plot.

Why the structure complicates any single number

GTA 6 tells one story through two leads who can be swapped at will, and some jobs are offered to only one of them. The character switching system and the decisions attached to those jobs mean two players can complete the story having done materially different things. A campaign with branching optional content resists a single authoritative hour count by design.

What is still unknown

No mission total, no chapter count, no official split between required and optional content, and nothing about how long the endgame or post-story free roam holds up. Review coverage after the November 19 launch will produce the first independent numbers.

The Extended Look breakdown covers the rest of what Rockstar established in August.

This page will be updated when independent completion times are published.
