GTA 6 Has Hurricanes and 170+ Animal Species, Rockstar Says

Rockstar has put two of GTA 6’s longest-running open questions to bed. In a 14-page cover story published by Game Informer on September 29, 2026, the studio says Leonida is hit by tropical storms and hurricanes, that weather is now localized and persistent, and that the state is home to more than 170 animal species — some of them classed as Rare, Discoverable or Legendary.
The feature is in Game Informer’s issue 382, written by Marcus Stewart from new interviews with Rockstar developers and illustrated with 12 new screenshots. The full text sits behind the magazine’s subscription; two free excerpts carry the headline facts, and the rest of this report draws on outlets that read the issue in full. Where a detail comes from only those second-hand reads, it is marked as such.
What Rockstar said about weather
The free excerpt attributes each of these directly to Rockstar:
| Feature | What was described |
|---|---|
| Cloudscapes | Dynamic, rolling across the map; clear skies through to overcast |
| Localized storms | You can stand in sunshine and watch rain falling in the distance |
| Persistence | Puddles and wet surfaces remain where a storm has passed |
| Rainbows | Appear after rain under the right light |
| Tropical storms and hurricanes | Present in Leonida, as in real Florida |
Outlets with the full issue — VICE, Kotaku and HotHardware among them — add a rebuilt wind model: gusts that kick up debris, ripple the surface of water and bend swamp grass, with wind shaped by offshore breezes and by buildings that block or redirect it. Storms are described with heavy rain, thunder, lightning and water running off rooftops.
That moves our weather and hurricanes page from rumored to confirmed. It had been held back since 2023 for one reason: a Florida setting makes hurricanes plausible, and plausible is not announced. Now it is.
The limit on the hurricane claim
Game Informer is careful here, and it is worth being equally careful. Its own summary says it does not know how often the larger storms occur, or how they affect gameplay and storytelling. Nothing published so far describes flooding that changes the map, destruction that persists, an evacuation mechanic or a hurricane season.
So the confirmed fact is narrow: hurricanes exist as weather in the game. Whether one is a scripted story set piece, a rare free-roam event or a regular part of the forecast is still unstated. Detailed claims about storm surge or wrecked neighbourhoods are not supported by anything Rockstar has said.
More than 170 species
The second excerpt is the wildlife count. Rockstar’s figure is over 170 species across land, air and sea. Reports from the full issue break that down as more than 60 types of bird and more than 30 land mammals, with fish and reptiles making up the rest.
| Group | Named so far |
|---|---|
| Native Florida species | Flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators |
| Invasive species | Green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, rhesus macaques |
| Marine life (via full-issue reports) | Sharks, whales, rays, turtles, jellyfish |
The invasive list is the telling detail. Florida really does have wild macaques and a cane toad problem, and including them says the research went past the postcard animals. Game Informer also describes new rendering work for animals — iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, distinct feather types and reworked fur.
Then there is the tiering. Certain animals are categorised as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, and Rockstar is keeping the harder-to-find ones secret. Red Dead Redemption 2 players will recognise the vocabulary. What the free excerpts do not state is what you do with a legendary animal once you find it. Some coverage reads the tiers as confirmation of hunting; Game Informer’s published summary does not say that, so our wildlife page records the species count and the tiers and leaves hunting open.
What else the issue restates
Much of the remaining detail matches what Rockstar showed in August. Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North is reported as putting Leonida at roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map — the same ratio Rob Nelson gave after the Extended Look, and already reflected on the map size page. The six named regions are unchanged.
The activity list reported from the issue adds a few entries to the ones seen on screen: billiards, mini golf, off-road racing and zoos sit alongside scuba diving, kayaking, base jumping, gyms, jet skis and airboats. Those additions come from second-hand reads of the paywalled feature rather than the free excerpts, and they are logged that way on the activities page.
Why this matters seven weeks out
For three years the honest answer to “does GTA 6 have a real ecosystem?” was a single alligator in a convenience store. A stated count of 170-plus species, with rarity tiers and habitat-specific invasive animals, is a different order of claim — closer to Red Dead Redemption 2’s wilderness than to GTA 5’s handful of ambient animals. Regions like Grassrivers now have a reason to be explored slowly.
The weather detail matters for a quieter reason. Localized storms and lingering puddles are simulation features, not trailer dressing: they imply the world tracks where it has rained. How much of that reaches driving, visibility or NPC behaviour has not been described.
The full record of what Rockstar has stated is in everything confirmed so far.
This page will be updated if Rockstar details how storms or legendary animals work in play.
