GTA Glossary: Terms Every Player Should Know

GTA has accumulated decades of shorthand, continuity labels, and gameplay terms. This alphabetized glossary explains the expressions a newcomer is most likely to meet, while separating established series language from features Rockstar has not announced for GTA 6.
A–F
The 3D universe
The continuity covering GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, Advance, Liberty City Stories, and Vice City Stories. Its locations and character histories do not automatically carry into the later HD universe, even when familiar city names return.
Free roam
Play outside a currently required mission route, when the player can explore the map and choose optional activities. Free roam is a core open-world idea, but the exact activities available vary by game.
G–H
Grand Theft Auto (GTA)
Rockstar Games’ open-world action series, and also a legal term used in the United States for stealing a vehicle. Players and publications commonly shorten the game series to GTA.
GTA Online
The online component that launched weeks after GTA V in 2013 and grew through years of updates. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6, so “GTA 6 Online” is currently an informal expectation, not a confirmed product.
HD universe
The continuity that began with GTA IV and includes GTA V and GTA 6. It reimagines familiar locations and concepts rather than continuing the exact character history of the 3D universe.
Heist
A planned robbery, often structured around preparation tasks and a larger final operation. Heists became especially prominent in GTA V and GTA Online; Rockstar has not detailed how GTA 6 will use them.
L–N
Leonida
The fictional present-day state in GTA 6, inspired by Florida. Announced regions include Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga; see the map and setting guide for a regional overview.
Mainline game
A numbered or major flagship entry in the series, although fans differ on exact boundaries. Spin-offs and handheld stories can still be fully developed GTA games even when a discussion uses “mainline” narrowly.
Mission
A structured objective that advances the story or another progression track. Missions commonly constrain location, equipment, or failure conditions more than ordinary free roam.
NPC
Short for non-player character: any character controlled by the game rather than a person. Pedestrians, shopkeepers, police officers, allies, and enemies can all be NPCs.
P–R
Protagonist
The playable central character through whom the story is experienced. GTA V uses three protagonists, while GTA 6 centers on Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval; the character guide covers the announced cast.
Protagonist switching
Changing control from one playable lead to another. GTA V built its story and free roam around Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, but Rockstar has not explained the exact switching rules for GTA 6’s two protagonists.
RAGE engine
RAGE means Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, Rockstar’s in-house technology used across its modern games. An engine supports areas such as rendering, physics, animation, and world systems, but its name alone does not confirm a game’s frame rate or individual features.
Rockstar Games
The publisher and developer organization behind Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and other series. Individual Rockstar studios collaborate across large projects.
Rockstar Newswire
Rockstar’s official news site for announcements, trailers, updates, and community posts. It is a primary source when checking whether a release detail has actually been announced; this site’s news section provides a fan-site summary layer.
S–V
Shark Cards
Paid products that add GTA dollars to a player’s GTA Online account. They belong to GTA Online’s economy; Rockstar has not announced Shark Cards or any equivalent for GTA 6.
Vice City
GTA’s fictional counterpart to Miami. The name refers both to the setting and to 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City; GTA 6 presents an HD-universe, present-day version within Leonida.
Wanted level
The indicator, traditionally represented by stars, showing the intensity of law-enforcement pursuit. Actions can raise it and evasion can clear it, though rules and police behavior differ between entries.
Useful comparison: continuity versus setting
New players often assume that a repeated city name means every old event remains canon. The series instead reuses satirical versions of American places across separate continuities.
| Term | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 3D universe | A shared older continuity | That its characters exist in GTA 6 |
| HD universe | The continuity beginning with GTA IV | That every old location returns |
| Vice City | A fictional city used in multiple eras | That both versions have identical geography |
| Leonida | GTA 6’s state and wider setting | The final playable map boundary |
This is why Tommy Vercetti’s Vice City and Lucia and Jason’s Vice City can share landmarks, themes, and names without being the same canonical version. The series order guide places the releases in context.
Terms that are not confirmed GTA 6 features
Familiar vocabulary easily becomes an accidental claim. GTA Online’s long success makes a future online experience seem plausible, but no GTA 6 online mode has been announced. Likewise, “Shark Cards,” a particular wanted-level maximum, GTA V-style protagonist switching, and a specific heist structure should not be presented as GTA 6 facts.
The confirmed basics are narrower: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; preloading opens November 12 and there is no disc; it is set in present-day Leonida; and Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval are the protagonists. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, file size, performance modes, age rating, or online component.
For direct evidence, start with Trailer 1, Trailer 2, and Rockstar’s official material. Knowing the glossary should make those sources easier to read without turning long-running series conventions into promises about the new game.
