Are there gyms in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar has confirmed that exercising visibly builds and tones Jason and Lucia's muscles, and the Extended Look shows Lucia working a bench press with button prompts. Gyms are usable, not scenery.
Verdict — Confirmed: Gyms are usable in GTA 6, working out is a player activity, and exercise visibly changes Jason and Lucia’s bodies.
This entry sat at rumored for nearly three years on the reasonable grounds that a fitness-heavy setting is not a fitness feature. Two things at the end of August 2026 settled it, and both came from Rockstar rather than from inference.
What Rockstar said
In its Autumn 2026 cover interview with Dazed, published August 26, Rockstar described the system directly: food affects Jason and Lucia’s weight, exercising visibly builds and tones their muscles, and long stretches without sleep — on the run from police, or on a multi-day bender — show in their features. Six named Rockstar staff spoke on the record for that piece, including Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson.
That is an announcement of an exercise mechanic with a persistent, visible result. It is not a description of a background animation.
What the Extended Look showed
The 26-minute Extended Look, which premiered on Netflix the following day, supplies the footage. Lucia works a bench press with alternating button prompts — player input driving the exercise, not a cutscene. Game Informer and Engadget both catalogued it from the premiere, alongside basketball, backyard wrestling, a shooting range, kayaking, scuba diving, jet skis and base jumping.
Between the two, the standard this page previously set for confirmation has been met: an official demonstration showing a character completing an exercise using equipment, with a stated persistent benefit.
Series precedent, revisited
| Game | Fitness precedent | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| GTA: San Andreas | Interactive gyms and physical stats | Central lifestyle and progression feature |
| GTA IV | Recreational outings, no comparable workout system | Limited fitness interaction |
| GTA V | Strength and stamina stats, sports activities | No San Andreas-style public gym loop |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Weight and condition tracked visibly | Appearance-led, not a gym loop |
| GTA VI | Usable gyms, exercise changes physique | Confirmed; capability effects unstated |
San Andreas is the obvious reference point, and the comparison is closer than GTA V’s invisible stat bars. But it is not identical. San Andreas tied body composition to what CJ could do — fighting styles, stamina, how long he could sprint. Rockstar has described GTA VI’s version only in terms of how the characters look.
What is still open
Whether a stronger Jason hits harder, swims longer or climbs better is unannounced. So is whether gyms charge a membership, whether specific equipment offers different exercises, how fast physique changes, and whether the two protagonists track separately. Rockstar has announced no skills, experience points or upgrade trees, which the skills and progression entry still tracks as unresolved.
The eating half of the same system is confirmed as an effect but not as a venue — Rockstar built a supermarket-and-fridge loop and cut it, and has not said what replaces it. That is covered in the restaurants and food entry.
Our read
Treat this as a condition system rather than a progression system until Rockstar says otherwise. Gyms exist, they are usable, and what the player does at them shows on the character — that much is settled. Anything about numbers, unlocks or combat benefits is still a guess.
Full context is in the body system report and the Extended Look breakdown.
