How does GTA 6 open?

GTA 6's opening mission has not been revealed. Lucia's imprisonment is confirmed background, but Rockstar has not said whether the game begins there, with Jason, or at another point in their story.

Verdict: Rumored — no GTA 6 prologue or first mission has been officially described.

Rockstar has supplied character backgrounds and the campaign’s broad premise, but those details are not a scene-by-scene outline. Lucia Caminos has been imprisoned for fighting for her family, Jason Duval is an ex-Army resident of the Leonida Keys, and the pair become entangled in a Leonida-wide conspiracy after easy money goes wrong. Rockstar has not said which of those events players see first.

What we actually know

The story centers on Lucia and Jason in present-day Leonida, with Vice City at its heart. Their relationship has been framed as a modern Bonnie and Clyde dynamic. The supporting cast includes Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista, Brian Heder, and Cal Hampton.

Lucia’s prison history is the detail most often mistaken for confirmation of an opening. It may be playable, shown later, summarized in dialogue, or used only as background. Likewise, the easy-money incident could be an opening mission, an early turning point, or an event reached after the player has learned the world. The official material does not settle the order. Our story guide keeps that boundary clear.

Series precedent

Rockstar openings teach players how to read a new setting while establishing pressure quickly, but their structures vary.

Game Opening approach Lesson for GTA 6
GTA: San Andreas A homecoming immediately turns hostile Background can become playable setup
GTA IV Arrival in Liberty City introduces Niko’s new life Character and place can lead before spectacle
GTA V A separate past event precedes the present story A prologue is possible, not required
RDR2 A crisis introduces the group under pressure Tutorials can be embedded in narrative

GTA V’s prologue is the clearest reason some players expect another time-separated opener. Yet GTA IV and San Andreas show Rockstar does not need the same device every time. Series precedent offers several possible shapes rather than one dependable template.

Plausible openings, not confirmed ones

The campaign could begin around Lucia’s release, with Jason in the Keys, with the pair already working together, or before their plan fails. Each option would serve a different purpose. Starting with Lucia could establish her immediate stakes; beginning with Jason could introduce the southern part of Leonida; opening on a joint job could establish their partnership quickly.

These are narrative possibilities, not reports. There is also no announced mission title, tutorial sequence, playable flashback, time jump, or opening location. Readers can compare the published footage through Trailer 1 and Trailer 2, but editing order in a trailer does not prove campaign chronology.

What would confirm it

The answer will become firm when Rockstar publishes an official gameplay demonstration, previews explicitly describe the retail opening with authorization, or the game releases on November 19, 2026. A clip without context would still need care because missions can be shown out of order.

Our read is that Rockstar will use the opening to establish both the partnership and Leonida efficiently, as its earlier games did for their casts and settings. Anything more specific would be invention today. This page will be updated when official information lands.
