Does GTA 6 support HDR and 120Hz?
HDR and 120Hz support have not been confirmed for GTA 6. Rockstar has announced the console platforms, but no HDR format, refresh-rate mode, VRR feature, resolution, or frame-rate target.
Verdict: Rumored — GTA 6’s HDR and high-refresh display features have not been announced.
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5, including PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not published display specifications for those versions. There is no confirmed HDR format, 120Hz output mode, variable refresh rate support, resolution target, or frame-rate target.
What we actually know
The supported consoles can output modern HDR and high-refresh signals in compatible software, but hardware capability is not a game feature announcement. A title may use HDR without a 120Hz mode, output a 120Hz signal without rendering at 120 frames per second, or use VRR only in certain modes. These terms should not be treated as synonyms.
The platform guide covers the announced systems. Our page on the rumored 60fps performance mode separately addresses frame-rate expectations; no performance mode is confirmed.
Display terms that are often confused
| Term | What it describes | GTA 6 status |
|---|---|---|
| HDR | A wider luminance and color presentation in supported output | Not announced |
| 120Hz output | A display signal refreshed 120 times per second | Not announced |
| 120fps rendering | The game producing 120 frames per second | Not announced |
| VRR | Display refresh adapting within a supported range | Not announced |
| Resolution mode | A selectable visual preset prioritizing image quality | Not announced |
This distinction is especially important for a large open-world game. A 120Hz container can be used for responsiveness or frame-pacing approaches without proving a 120fps target.
Series and console context
Rockstar’s major open-world console games have historically launched at 30fps. GTA IV launched on consoles in 2008, GTA V in 2013, and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 under very different hardware conditions, so none provides a direct GTA 6 specification. Later ports and upgrades likewise cannot define the launch modes of a new game.
PS5 Pro inclusion may allow a different presentation from the base PS5, but Rockstar has not explained whether versions differ in resolution, effects, ray tracing, or frame rate. Our ray-tracing page tracks that separate unknown.
What would confirm it
Reliable confirmation could come from a Rockstar technical post, official console-store metadata, a gameplay presentation with named modes, or authorized analysis of final code. Even then, each platform and display mode should be documented independently. A trailer uploaded at a particular frame rate does not confirm how the game runs locally.
Our read is that HDR would be unsurprising for a major current-generation release, but it remains unannounced. There is even less basis for promising 120Hz or 120fps. Buyers should wait for an official mode list instead of purchasing a display around an assumed feature. This page will be updated when official information lands.
