GTA 6 Codes Are Region-Locked on PS5 — But Not on Xbox

Rockstar’s own support documentation spells out something that matters to anyone planning to buy Grand Theft Auto VI outside their own country: PlayStation download codes are tied to the region of your PlayStation account, and Xbox codes are not.

The wording is Rockstar’s, on the support article covering platforms and editions: “Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account.” Then, plainly, for the other platform: “Xbox: Codes purchased are not region-locked.”

This is documentation, not an announcement

Worth being precise about what happened here. That support page carries a last-updated date of June 24, 2026 — the day before pre-orders opened. Rockstar did not publish a newswire post about region locking this week; the policy has been sitting in the support documentation since launch-day pre-orders went live, and it drew wider attention in the last few days once people read it closely.

That distinction matters for a tracker like this one. The fact is official and first-party, which is the highest evidentiary bar we apply. But nobody at Rockstar made an announcement, so anyone framing this as a sudden policy change is adding drama that the source does not support.

What the PlayStation rule actually says

Rockstar lists purchase regions and, for each, the account countries a code from that region may be redeemed on:

Purchase region Accounts that can redeem
North America Canada, United States
United Kingdom United Kingdom
Brazil Brazil
LATAM Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay
Japan Japan
Korea South Korea
Saudi Arabia & UAE Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
Rest of Asia Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand
Rest of EMEA and Asia Australia, most of Europe, India, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine

One regional wrinkle is Rockstar’s own: codes issued in Japan expire 170 days after the issuance date, which Rockstar gives as the November 19, 2026 launch date, “due to regional regulations.” That puts the deadline in early May 2027 — a real constraint for anyone buying a Japanese copy as a gift or leaving it sealed.

Rockstar’s general advice is the same one it gives for redemption errors: “It is recommended that you buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems.”

Why this lands harder than it normally would

Region-locked codes are not new to PlayStation. What makes this consequential for GTA 6 is a decision we covered a week ago: the boxed copy is a download code, with no disc in the box — the preload and no-disc report has the detail.

A disc was historically region-free on PS5. It was the format that let you import a copy from a cheaper market, or buy one abroad on holiday, and have it simply work. With the disc gone, every physical PlayStation copy is a code, and every code carries the region rule. The one route around regional pricing that used to be reliable is now closed on PlayStation and left open on Xbox.

That asymmetry is Rockstar’s to explain, and it has not. The support page states the difference without giving a reason for it.

What this means if you are buying

The practical checklist is short:

If you are still weighing formats, the physical vs digital comparison now has one more entry on the digital side of the ledger, and the pre-order guide covers retailer terms.

This page updates if Rockstar revises the region groupings or explains the platform difference.
