The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, is offering soldiers a four-day pass timed to Grand Theft Auto VI’s November 19 release if they sign a re-enlistment contract. The battalion’s memo circulated online in mid-August and read like a hoax. It was not. The terms

The offer is narrow and specific. Soldiers in the battalion — part of the 3rd Infantry Division — who re-enlist between August 1 and November 14, 2026 receive a special four-day pass scheduled around the game’s launch. The contract has to run a minimum of two years and can extend to six. Pass dates are coordinated between the soldier and their chain of command rather than fixed to November 19 itself.

Roughly 130 soldiers across engineering, signal intelligence, human resources and medical specialties qualify. Twenty had already chosen the incentive when the story broke — not a trivial share of the eligible pool for an offer that had been available for under three weeks.

Why a battalion did this

The idea came from a new career counsellor who pitched unconventional incentives to unit leadership ahead of the fiscal year 2027 re-enlistment cycle, which opens in October. Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson, put the reasoning simply: “The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what Soldiers are interested in.”

It is not an isolated experiment. The Army has been trying a range of unorthodox retention levers recently, including bonuses tied to fitness test scores and an auction-style system for warrant officer bonuses. A four-day pass costs the service nothing in cash. What makes this one notable is the assumption underneath it: that a specific consumer product, on a specific date, is a strong enough draw to move a re-enlistment decision worth two to six years of someone’s life.

What it says about the launch

Rockstar has not commented, and there is no indication the company was involved. That is the point. This is a third party with no commercial relationship to Take-Two treating November 19 as a fixed feature of the calendar and building policy around it.

Employers planning for the date is not new — the hype numbers have been unusual since preorders opened in June, and analysts have spent the year modelling how much economic activity the launch week displaces. A US Army battalion writing a launch date into a retention memo is a different order of thing, because the Army is not trying to sell anything. It is simply pricing what its soldiers want.

The Army also gets something from the timing that a cash bonus would not deliver. The pass is also a pass, not leave: it is scheduled at the chain of command’s discretion, and unit requirements come first.

The confirmed facts are narrower than the retellings suggest. The Army confirmed the memo is genuine and the programme is running. It did not confirm any relationship with Rockstar, any expansion beyond the battalion, or any guarantee that a given soldier’s four days will land on launch day.
