Confirmed — November 12, 2026. Rockstar has published preload timing: the download opens one full week before launch, at local midnight on November 12, for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is an unusually long runway, and it changes what launch-night preparation actually looks like.

What was confirmed

A week of lead time is generous by console standards — most major releases open preloads around 48 hours out. The practical effect is that bandwidth stops being a launch-night variable for almost everyone. Even a slow connection has seven days to move a very large install before the game unlocks.

“Local midnight” means midnight in the time zone attached to your store account, not a single global moment. If your console account region differs from where you physically are, the preload will follow the account.

Physical buyers preload too

The detail that surprised people: physical copies contain a download code, not a disc. Rockstar confirmed there is no disc version at launch. A boxed copy is a code in a case, which means physical buyers install exactly the same way digital buyers do — redeem the code, then preload.

That inverts the usual advice. Historically a disc gave you a head start because the bulk of the data came off the media. Here it gives you nothing, and it adds delivery risk: the code has to physically arrive before you can start downloading. Anyone choosing between formats should read the physical vs digital comparison, because the trade-offs are no longer what they were for GTA 5.

Rockstar has not given a public reason for dropping the disc. Explanations circulating — install size, launch-day security — are outside commentary, not official statements, and this page does not treat them as fact.

What is still unknown

Two things preload does not tell you.

The first is install size. Rockstar has not published a figure on either storefront. Rockstar has historically posted storage requirements a few weeks out, so an official number is plausible in the autumn. Until then, treat every circulating GB figure as an estimate, including reasonable-sounding ones. We track that separately on the file size page.

The second is the unlock hour. Preload timing and playable timing are different questions, and a confirmed preload date does not reveal which launch model Rockstar has chosen for November 19. That remains open on the release-day unlock time page.

What this means practically

Clear the space before November 12 rather than after. The realistic planning figure is well north of 100 GB, and freeing storage on a console is slow work you do not want to discover on launch week. If you are buying physical, order early enough that the box arrives before the preload window opens — otherwise you are waiting on a courier while digital buyers are already downloading.

Pre-orders placed through November 20 still carry the Vintage Vice City Pack, so there is no bonus penalty for deciding late. The preorder news page covers the confirmed commercial details.
